Web Video: The value of face time

April 26th, 2007 by Chris Punke

I was recently working on a web video presentation that allowed a local business owner to give a brief message about his business and to announce the launch of his new web site. As I finished up the tedious process of polishing up the interface, and making all of the pieces and parts work as they should I felt like sharing in my accomplishment by showing it to my wife. (One reason is she’s the best person for bouncing new stuff off of because she won’t hold back on what she thinks of it, and I also was hoping for a little ‘pat on the back’ for my efforts.)

As I showed her the video I was expecting her to notice all of my hard work that went into the interface and the functionality. Instead, the thing that struck her most was the impression she got of the business owner. “He looks like a really nice guy!” she exclaimed. I agreed but proceeded to try to get her to notice the interface niceties I worked to hard on and to try to solicit her feedback on whether or not I did a good job…

Then it hit me. This thing worked so well, my wife didn’t even notice the interface! She only noticed how “nice” that guy talking to her on my laptop looked.

Moral of the story? That one minute video made an immediate impact on my wife. As a business owner, be thinking about how a short web video about your business might make a big impact on your prospective customers.
